Planning For A School Trip To Singapore?

Q1 I am planning a study tour to Singapore for my school/university. How do I go about planning and who can I seek assistance from to plan the programme?
A. Congratulations on your choice. Here are some tips to help you:
  1. Get your travel agent to plan for the travel arrangements, eg. booking the air tickets, hotel/hostel and transportation.
  2. Get a proposal for the programme and discuss your requirements. The travel agent, through contacts in Singapore, should be able to advise what the best programme combination is within your allocated budget.
  3. Request for educational programmes for your group where it is available at the various attractions.
  4. Tertiary student groups who plan to organize company visits should contact the Singapore companies early so as to facilitate arrangements.
  5. Ensure that provisions are made for language requirements (ie. other than English). Some providers may only be able to cater to a limited range of languages.
  6. Ensure that all participants have valid travel documents and where necessary, visa applications should be made early.
  7. Remember to find out what the students need to bring for the trip, eg. if they are going camping, they may need to bring a torch, insect repellent etc, if these are not provided by the organisers. Although Singapore has hot tropical weather all year, it may be useful for participants to bring a sweater or light windbreaker for use in air-conditioned spaces.
The tips given above are by no means exhaustive. You may also seek assistance from the nearest STB Offices.

Q2 What are some suggestions for places to visit during our Singapore study tour?
A. One of the best parts about organising a school trip is that Singapore brims with hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered.

Whether it is a three-day or two-week programme, the island abounds with a variety of choices for indoor and outdoor activities. One can learn about Singapore's history and cultural heritage, explore nature by learning about animals and their habitat, camp by the beach, or uncover the mysteries of science and technology.

Get your travel agent to propose some suggestions or you may check out here. The suggestions given are by no means exhaustive.

Q3 Can the attractions offer learning opportunities for our students?
A. Yes, many attractions include interactive learning activities for students. For instance, the Singapore Zoo has a Maths Trail, students can go on behind-the-scene tours at Underwater World, and the museums offer interactive learning areas for young visitors. The Singapore Science Centre has many interactive exhibits and they also periodically hold special themed exhibitions. For example, in 2004, they held a "lord of the Rings" exhibition which showcased how they created the special effects for the movie. Students can also learn teambuilding and leadership skills from some providers that organize adventure camps.

Q4 What are some options of enrichment courses I can attend while on a study tour in Singapore?
A. For school groups on a longer stay, they can choose to take up enrichment programmes such as language, IT, arts and drama or adventure camps.

Since 1 June 2004, visitors to Singapore need not apply for a separate Student's Pass to attend short term courses of up to 30 days. The usual visa application applies.

Q5 Are there any sample itineraries to guide on Singapore study tour?
A. Yes. Check out here. Feel free to add activities or customize to suit your time and budget.

Q6 What other options of accommodation are there for the school group besides hotel accommodation?
A. Singapore offers a wide variety of accommodation types to suit different budgets and needs. The wide range of accommodation options include boarding schools, private hostels, private apartments/house and homestays.

Check out here or you may contact the nearest STB Offices for assistance.

Q7 My school would like to have an exchange with a local school during our Singapore study tour. How do I arrange a visit to a local school?
A. School visits are possible, subject to schools' availability. A typical school visit could include a brief of the local school system, tour of the school facilities, interaction with the local students or even participation in some friendly matches. Approach the nearest STB Offices for assistance.
