What are the entry requirements to study at educational institutions in Singapore? |

Government, Government Aided and Independent Schools International students without DP, IEO and whose parents are not SC/SPR and who wish to seek school admission to Primary 2–5 and Secondary 1–3 levels in mainstream public primary and secondary schools respectively are to take part in the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS).

Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) AEIS involves a centralised test on English and Mathematics, and applicants who pass the test would automatically be offered a place in a suitable school, based on available school vacancies and their performance in the centralised test. There would be no school choices. To register for or find out more about AEIS, please visit the AEIS webpage.
Applying Directly to Schools International students without DP, IEO and whose parents are not SC/SPR and who are seeking admission to Primary 2–5 and Secondary 1–3 but are unable to make it for the AEIS exercise and those who are seeking admission to Primary 1 or JCs may approach their schools of choice directly to apply for admission.
Step-by-Step Guide for Applying Directly to Schools Admission is subject to the availability of vacancies, provided there are no SC/SPR children on the schools’ waiting lists, and the schools’ admission criteria.
- International students without DP, IEO and whose parents are not SC/SPR and who are seeking admission to Primary 2–5 or Secondary 1–3 are required to sit for and pass a Qualifying Test (QT) before making a direct application to schools.
International students seeking admission to Primary 1 or JCs are not required to sit for the QT; please see Step 2.

- Submit your application at the school of your choice with the required documents.
- If there is a vacancy, you will need to pass a placement test conducted by the school. Applicants will be tested on subjects such as English, Mathematics and Mother Tongue Language (where applicable).
- Upon passing the test, the school will issue you with a Letter of Acceptance (LOA).
- The Letter of Acceptance is valid for two weeks, during which time, you must apply for a Student’s Pass with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
- The applicant must return to the school with a valid student’s pass within 2 weeks of the LOA’s date of issue. Otherwise, the applicant will forfeit his / her admission to the school.
For other private, foreign system, international schools and universities, polytechnics or institute of technical education:
- Apply directly to the educational institutions accompanied by the relevant certification and documentation.
- Some institutions or courses may require you to undergo an interview or placement test. Some schools may also require work experience.
These requirements are usually stated in the course prospectus, brochures or websites of the institutions.

What is the difference between private and public institutions? |

Public Schools are government schools. They are registered and managed by the Ministry of Education, Singapore.
In Singapore, there are 11 gazetted public holidays and three scheduled school holidays in a calendar year.

Private Schools - There are various types of private schools in Singapore. Private schools are generally run by private companies or non-profit organisations. There are also some private institutions that receive public funds, eg. NAFA (The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts), SMU (Singapore Management University) and LASALLE-SIA college of the Arts.

Do I need a Visa and Student's Pass to study in Singapore? |

A foreigner must apply for a Student's Pass if he/she has been accepted by an educational institution to pursue full-time studies in Singapore, unless he/she is a:.
- Dependant's Pass holder studying in a Government/ Government-Aided/ Independent school/ Foreign System School/ Kindergarten registered with MOE or Childcare centre licensed by MCYS;
- Immigration Exemption Order holder; or
- Visitor who has been granted a short term Visit Pass at the Singapore Checkpoint and wish to attend a short course that can be completed within the validity of the initial Visit Pass granted to him/her at the Singapore Checkpoint or 30 days, whichever is shorter.
Upon receiving the Letter of Acceptance from the school which is valid for 2 weeks, the applicant must proceed to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) to apply for a Student’s Pass. For applicants who require a visa to enter Singapore, please ensure that your application for the Student Pass is submitted to the ICA at least 2 months before the commencement date of the course. Note: For PRC national who wishes to pursue a language, commercial, vocational or fine arts course at private schools in Singapore (with the exception of students taking a degree or postgraduate degree course and students studying at SQC for PEOs schools), applicant is required to submit Student's Pass application through the Singapore Embassy in Beijing.
With the launch of CaseTrust for Education all private education organisations will need to have the CaseTrust-endorsed Student Protection Scheme to offer school placement for international students.

Upon approval of the student pass application, an In-Principle Approval(IPA) letter will be issued to the applicant. The security deposit, if required, would be indicated in the IPA letter to the applicant.

Students studying in Autonomous Schools are also required to pay additional miscellaneous fees. Please check directly with the schools on the actual amount of miscellaneous fees payable.
The rates of school and miscellaneous fees payable are reviewed by the Ministry of Education and individual schools from time to time.
For Independent Schools, the school fees payable varies from school to school. Please check directly with the schools concerned for the fees payable.
